Edward Strickland
Edward Burton Strickland passed away on Feb. 3, 2010, after a short illness. He was 94 years old and was a resident of Highland Manor Nursing Home, where he had lived since 2008.
Ed was born in Grasmere, Idaho, on Aug. 21, 1915. He was the third child of six children born to Edward Burton "Burt" and Susie Taylor Strickland. His parents homesteaded near Louse Creek near Grasmere until 1920 when they moved to Jarbidge, Nev., in 1920. His father cut juniper and mahogany logs for mine timbers for the several mines in the Jarbidge area. They moved in 1925 to and homesteaded on the Diamond A desert near Dorsey Creek where they built a log cabin between 1922 and 1925. Ed went to the Rimrock grade school there and then went to high school in 1929 in Bruneau, Idaho, and lived with his grandparents, Joe and Maggie Taylor.
In 1930, he went back to help his folks on the Diamond A. His parents sold out and moved to Beowawe in 1937 and bought a dairy farm, which they ran until his Dad died in 1938. His mother, Susie, sold the farm and bought a boarding house in Beowawe, Nev.
Ed began to work for the ranches around Beowawe, Battle Mountain and up near Charleston for Mac Prunty, Jim Tucker, and Bill Wright.
During that time he met and married Eleanor Wright.
Ed moved to Charleston in 1946 and started driving the mail route through upper Elko County in the Mountain City to Charleston area. He left the mail route in the mid-1950s and began working on ranches.
His second marriage was to Carolyn Antista in 1958.
He married Margie Christensen in 1962 and began working for the Lander County road department in Battle Mountain. They lived there for 22 years and moved to Elko in 1982 where he retired.
They enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Margie passed away in 1996 and Ed continued to live and enjoy life in Elko.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Margie; his brother, Hugh, in 2001; and sisters Ruby in 1997, Sue in 1999, Ida Mae in 1918 (at birth), Iva Mae in 2001 and Ruth in 2008.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Virginia Price of Montello, Nev., Darlene Cline of Las Vegas, Ed Kelley of Fall City, Wash., Ray Kelley of Twin Falls, Idaho, Donna Phipps of Meridian, Idaho, Flora Ralls of Meridian, Idaho, Gene Strickland of Atwater, Calif., Dorothy Hewett of Sparks, Nev., Maxine Graham of Wadsworth, Nev., Carolyn Mastretti of Austin, Nev., Susan Williams of Austin, Nev., Dee Holloway of Reno, Nev., Billie Sylvester of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Roy Wilson of Harrison, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Burns Funeral Home and a memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Feb. 9, 2010. He will be buried next to his wife, Margie, in the Burns Memorial Garden.
