After high school, Gene worked as a hand for ranchers in the Bruneau Valley. He then attended Boise Junior College/University of Idaho before entering the Army, serving as a CPL T during the Korean War.

When he returned, he married Susan Gail Kohring of Bruneau on May 3, 1952, in Coeur d'Alene.

Gene returned to the University of Idaho where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956.

He accepted a position at the Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake, Calif., earning several awards and recognitions during his 25 years of employment. When he retired in 1982, he and Susan returned to Bruneau.

Gene preferred the wilderness to life in the city, and could often be found enjoying archery, hunting, fishing and camping during his "off" hours with friends and family.
