Nita Baker, 93

Nita M. Baker, 93, died Nov. 17, 2003, with family by her side at the Elmore Long Term Care Unit.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 21, at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Nita was born in Baker City, Ore., on Aug. 14, 1910, to Jake and Emelia Ebell Hucker. She graduated from Baker City High School in 1929 and Business College in 1930.

It was while waiting tables for the crew of men working at Eagle Creek in Brendel Mining camp in 1933 that she met Charlie Baker. They were married Dec. 8, 1935. To that union were born three daughters.

In 1952 Nita and Charlie purchased a building used as a residence in Featherville, to begin converting it into a store. They owned and operated Featherville Store, Cafe, and Motel for 16 years before selling it and building their retirement home in Featherville.

Nita played the piano for more than 30 years up to and including this past summer at Church of the Wildwood in Featherville. "Her special musical talent was a joy to many people," her family noted.

Nita is survived by: her daughters, Marlene (John) McCoy and Donna (Rod) Brower, five grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Charlie, an infant daughter Colleen, and infant brother Clarence and brother Ralph, and infant sisters Velma and Lena Mae.
