Jim Hering, 80, of Mountain Home, died peacefully Monday morning, June 9, 2003, at the Veterans Hospital in Boise.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at Summers Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, Mountain Home. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Jim was born April 8, 1923, in Mountain Home, to Oswald(Ole) and Ethel Hering. He attended Mountain Home Schools. He served his country proudly in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska during WWII in the U.S. Army and received a medical discharge.

His first marriage was to Lois Gier of Oakland, Calif. They were later divorced.

In 1949 he married Shirley Davies of Mountain Home. Jim and Shirley divorced in 1965.

A man of many trades and abilities, he worked on many major construction projects including Anderson Ranch Dam, Grand Coulee Dam, Brownlee Dam, MHAFB, the Chevron Oil pipeline, the Orchard Missile site and the Air Force Base in Guam. His last job before semi-retiring was as a millwright for Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill at Toledo, Ore. With the varied jobs and skills he was a member of several different labor and trade unions.

Jim was always happiest in the mountains, skiing, hunting and fishing when he was young. Gold mining was added to the hunting and fishing during his active years, and he was finally content with an occasional trip to the mining claims as he became older. He especially enjoyed picking asparagus, mushrooms and wild berries.

He is survived by: his five children, Lovel Fries of Middleton; Jim (and Marge) Hering of Boise; Ole Hering of Mountain Home; Cindy Huff (Richard Pumphrey) of Gooding; and Mary Ann Nitzel, (Tom Zabala) of Meridian; a brother, Charles (and Barbara) Hering of Renton, Wash.; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Ethel; sisters Viola, Irene, Exine and Mary; brothers Oswald, Herold and William.
