John Echevarria, 81

John L. Echeverria, 81, of Mountain Home, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at the Elmore Medical Center Nursing Home.

Funeral mass was held Monday, March 10, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Mountain Home. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

John was born July 6, 1921, in Bruneau, Idaho, the son of Zoilo and Maria Dolores Echeverria. He was schooled in Mountain Home and graduated from high school in 1940. John joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in Alaska with the military police. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge from the Army, John worked at Montgomery Blunk Grocery and Department Store and the Merc, until his retirement in 1986.

John was past president of the F.O.E. in Mountain Home; he was on the Board of Directors for the Mountain Home Senior Center, an active member in American Legion Post #26 and a member of 40&8 of the American Legion in Mountain Home. He was also a member of Euskal Lagunak (the Basque organization of Mountain Home) and a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Mountain Home.

John is survived by: his sisters, Zoila Chacartegui and Dolores Robison of Mountain Home, and brother Isaac L. (Ike) Echeverria, of Boise, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Zoilo and Maria Dolores Echeverria, who immigrated from Lequetio, Viscaya, Spain, in 1907 and 1914, respectively, and by his older brothers, Leon and Benito.
