Reward offered for poached sturgeon

The poacher left behind only the head of the prehistoric fish.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has increased its offer to a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who illegally poached a sturgeon, probably near the King Hill pump station on the Snake River.

The head of the fish, a species that has existed for 200 million years, was found in the river near the pump station. Idaho Fish and Game Conservation Officer Jeff Day said that based on the size of the head he estimated the sturgeon was six- to seven-feet long.

Day said it appears the incident happened on or around election day, Nov. 6.

"From the looks of it, how they cut the head off, it looks like they may have done this before," he said.

Anyone with information concerning the case should call the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at 1-800-632-5999, or call the Jerome Regional Fish and Game Office at 208-324-4359. Callers can remain anonymous
