Shirley Louise Davies Hering

Shirley Louise Davies Hering, 86, who had a genuine vigor and zest for life, passed away on January 25, 2012. A viewing will be on Thursday, February 2, 2012, from 5:00pm until the 7:00PM Rosary at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012, at 10:00AM, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Shirley was born on November 8, 1925, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She shared her happy childhood with parents Harold Frank Davies and Bessie McClanahan, and older sisters Clarice and Elsie Jean. Upon graduating from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado, she moved to Mountain Home in the fall of 1948.

She was a teacher at Mountain Home High School instructing classes in Biology, General Science, Girls' Physical Education and Health. Throughout her career she held positions of Counselor, Dean of Girls, and Registrar. Other activities included the Girls' Basketball Coach and Advisor of GAA, Pep Club, Cheerleaders, FTA and Girls League. She was also the State Future Teachers of American Advisor and a member of the Title III ESEA Board. As Registrar she worked to promote the local scholarship program of Mountain Home and MHAFB, and retired in June of 1984.

Shirley became a member of the MHEA, IEA, NEA, Alpha Delta Kappa and Mother Cabrini Sodality. She was President of MHEA 1953-54. In 1961 Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa was colonized, with Shirley as the Charter President. Throughout the years she held several other offices and celebrated her 50 years of membership in 2011. Shirley realized how important it was to be a part of an organization that recognized and encourages excellence in education and the sharing of the gift of altruism. In her Church, she has been a member of the Parish Counsel, a Eucharistic Minister, held several offices in Mother Cabrini Sodality, and taught in the CCD program.

Shirley's passions in life included traveling, gardening, playing bridge, cooking, fishing and the personal computer.

Shirley is survived by her five children; Lovell Fries of Nampa, James and his wife Marge Hering of Boise, Ole Hering of Mountain Home, Cindy Hering-Huff of Gooding, and Mary Ann Carpenter of Ketchum, six grandchildren, 5 ½ great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
