Janis Urps

Our mother, Janis Marie Hurd Urps, 87, of Meridian, formerly of Glenns Ferry, Idaho, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at the Saint Luke's Hospital in Meridian, Idaho, after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held at the Glenns Ferry First United Methodist Church, located at 205 Ada St. in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. Internment will follow at Glenns Rest Cemetery in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. Services are under the direction of Relyea Funeral Chapel in Boise, Idaho.

Mom was born on March 1, 1923, in Davy, W. Va., to Tony and Tillie Hurd. She grew up and attended school there. Mom met our dad there and they were married on Sept. 7, 1947. They lived in Davy for several years until Dad left the coal mines to join the Air Force. They were then sent to Texas and from there transferred to Florida. In 1958, they were transferred to Mountain Home Air Force Base near Mountain Home, Idaho.

Mom worked all of her adult life in retail. She worked at the Mountain Home Air Force Base Exchange for over ten years. Later, she worked for Meserole's Market and the Corner Market in Glenns Ferry. She retired from the King Hill Irrigation District office in 1999.

Mom was an active member in the Glenns Ferry United Methodist Woman's group. She was also an avid cook and baker. Mom took great pride in her Martha Washington candy and her lemon meringue pies. No one ever left her home hungry.

Mom had a strong religious belief and all of her family and friends were remembered often in her prayers. She was a very faithful and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Mom and Dad celebrated 40 years together before Dad's passing in 1987. Together they had three children.

Mom is survived by her children, Estelle (James) Thomas, Maggie Ransom, James (Sandy) Urps, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, one grandson, her husband and a son-in-law.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Meridian Care Center for all the help and loving care they gave our mother. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Glenns Ferry United Methodist church, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, or to a charity of your choice.
