Mary Gertrude Shaw, 91, of Mountain Home, formerly of Grand View, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at a local hospital.

A viewing was held Friday, May 16, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 17, at the Knight Community Church in Grand View. A private family committal service was held at the Riverside Cemetery in Grand View prior to the memorial service.

Mary Gertrude was born on Oct. 13, 1916, in Grand View. She was the eldest of four daughters born to Ross and Margaret (Wallace) Osborn. Gertrude received her 12 years of schooling in Grand View, skipping a grade in elementary, then staying out of school to work during high school, returning to graduate with her classmates.

Gertrude married Morgan Shaw on Nov. 24, 1935, and they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary before Morgan's death in 1989.

For a short time after they were married, Morgan and Gertrude lived and worked in Mullan, Idaho, but they knew they had to return to the Grand View valley, where they farmed for many years. In her later years, when Gertrude talked about "home," her family knew she meant Grand View. The couple were the parents of three children, Darrol, Vera Lea and Arlie.

Gertrude was a life-long member of Knight Community Church providing the piano music for many years. She accompanied many singing groups and soloists.

Her hobbies were sewing, quilting, reading (especially scripture), crocheting, and bowling.

She also was a sports fan, always cheering for the local schools and the Boise State Broncos.

Gertrude was employed at Mountain Home Air Force Base for 22 years.

She was a member of the Grand View Senior Center. Morgan was a Charter Member of the Grand View Lion's Club and together they supported the auction and other functions of the club, taking several trips with fellow members.

She is survived by: her daughter, Vera Lea (Ted) Jayo of Grand View; her son, Arlie (Linda) Shaw of Mountain Home; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, three sisters, Jeanette Hemenway of Grand View, Letha Gribble of Boise, and Juanita Collett of Grand View, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morgan, her son, Darrol, and three brother in-laws.

"To all who knew her, Gertrude was a very kind and wonderful person," her family said. "She was the best mother and grandmother. As a resident of the valley for so many years, her list of friends is endless."

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to charities of choice.
