Donald Schmitz passed away peacefully on October 29, surrounded by his beloved wife, Christel, and their two daughters.

From an early age, Don developed a deep love for the outdoors and the life of a sportsman. His first job, resetting bowling pins at a local alley, allowed him to save enough to purchase his first shotgun for $12—a milestone that sparked a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing.

In 1961, Don enlisted in the United States Air Force, embarking on a career that enabled him to travel the world. While stationed at Ramstein Air Base in 1964, he met and married the love of his life, Christel Neumann. Together, they welcomed two daughters at Landstuhl Army Hospital. Don’s dedication to aircraft maintenance was evident throughout his military service, and his work brought the family back to the United States.

His enthusiasm for the outdoors continued during his service, including a memorable year-long tour in Alaska, where he harvested a moose and built his own boat to fish the Yukon River. In 1975, Don received orders to Mountain Home Air Force Base, where Idaho became the perfect setting to raise his family. He spent countless days enjoying Anderson Ranch Reservoir and CJ Strike, happiest when fishing with Christel by his side.

After 20 years of honorable service, Don retired from the Air Force and continued his career in Civil Service from 1982 to 1996. His legacy is one of adventure, dedication, and love for family.

Don will be deeply missed. We take comfort in believing he is now fishing every lake in the clouds. He is survived by his wife, Christel Schmitz; daughters Susan (Lloyd) Hooker and Cathy (Phil) Tino; three grandchildren—Lauren, Colton, and Drake; and two great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at the Veterans Cemetery, with a celebration of life later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled Veterans Fund.
