Raymond Michael Basabe, 64, of Nampa, died at home, May 1, 2018. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 4:00 PM until the time of the recitation of the rosary at 7:00 PM at Alsip and Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Avenue South, Nampa. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 16, by the Reverend Caleb Vogel at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, 510 W. Roosevelt Ave. in Nampa.

Raymond was born in Boise on July 8, 1953 to John and Ruby Basabe. He grew up in Grand View, Idaho, attending Grand View Elementary and Grand View High School. Following the consolidation of the Grandview, Bruneau, and Oreana school communities, Raymond’s senior class was the first to graduate from the newly formed Rimrock High School. He was a member of the basketball team, the football team, National Honor Society, and student body president.

Raymond loved anything to do with his horses. He was a member of the Owyhee Vaqueros 4H Club and spent countless hours riding “around the horn” with his posse; Toni and Dorothy on Peanuts, Sugar and Smoky. He loved to water ski, ride and never missed a Bruneau or Murphy dance.

After graduation, Raymond attended Boise State College. Leaving college, he spent time in Reno, Nevada, as a blackjack dealer at Harold’s Casino.

Upon his return from Nevada, Raymond enrolled in Razzle-Dazzle school of cosmetology and earned his barbers license. He started at the shop, Counterpoint, on Holly Street and Razor Ray was born!

Just like his dad, Raymond would be up by 4 AM, stop at Albertson’s for donuts, and get to work. Razor Ray’s was open when most businesses were not - always. His many and dedicated clientele have become many and dedicated friends. His appreciation to each and every one of you was deep and heartfelt.

He was witty, clever, blunt, charming, ornery and quick-tempered. Even without a voice, Raymond made his presence and opinions known. There was never any question as to where he stood. He loved morning mass, talk radio, British comedy and Lawrence Welk.

Raymond is survived by his brother Tom, and his wife Luisa, of Grandview and sister, Marie, and her husband Larry Alder of Eagle. He has three nephews, Michael and Brian Basabe and John Alder; a niece Mila and her husband Chris Perry, and a great-niece Marcía Basabe.

Survivors also include his friends, Maria Cuevas, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schneehagen, and Mr. and Mrs. Shane Phillips. He had a special spot in his heart for the Phillips' children - Jasmia and James.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby Basabe; his grandparents, Gregorio and Andresa Basabe and Benito and Asunción Ysursa.

Memorials in Raymond‘s memory can be made to the “Building on Faith” campaign at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Nampa, the John and Ruby Memorial Scholarship at Rimrock High School or to your favorite charity.
