This month in history: Military conflict affects community of Mountain Home

Wednesday, April 25, 2018
In a front page photo from the January 2, 1991 issue of the Mountain Home News MHAFB Airmen stand ready to board the C-130 that will take them to Saudi Arabia.

April 11, 2018 was the 27th Anniversary of the official cease fire between coalition forces and Iraq after the end of Operation Desert Storm.

In the community of Mountain Home the military build up known as Desert Shield and the following military offensive code named Operation Desert Storm was front and center in our world. As a young kid attending West Elementary, I remember vividly the surrealness of a good portion of my schoolmates having parents or siblings being sent to the Middle East in what seemed like a blink of an eye. • GOOD MORNING

Staff writer Stephanie's history piece this month is how Operation Desert Storm affected our community personally as well. With the 27th anniversary being this month she took the opportunity to research our publications during this time to pull some story history and photography. Though the photos are not as clear as we had hoped, shooting them directly out of the old papers makes reproduction difficult but we thought we would try anyway. As she dug in and the story unfolded for her she found she could not do it in just one piece and do it justice so we will have at least 1 possibly 2 followups in next weeks edition. As always don't forget to pick up your copy of the Mountain Home News on racks this week for the full story or stop by and subscribe so that you have it delivered with your mail weekly. We thank our subscribers and readers for their support and our advertisers that give you, the readers the specials and sales they have for your "shop local" experience. This week we have the Spring Spruce page that highlights our advertisers that have what you need for your spring and summer projects. Have a great day and enjoy the warming up weather. I know I am.
