Promoting an effort to find cure for cancer

Jessica Mespelt is joined by her family and friends as she starts the "cancer sweep" lap of this year's Relay for Life in Carl Miller Park. Volunteers spent Saturday walking laps around the park to raise money for cancer research and treatment in addition to raising awareness about the disease.

The sun started to shine through the thick layer of grey clouds that brought with them some rain showers that dampened Carl Miller Park. To a point, it seemed to represent a glimmer of hope and a ray of sunshine to a number of people that had gathered in the park that morning.

One by one, they stepped onto the designated pathway surrounding Carl Miller Park. Splitting off into two groups, dozens walked one way while the others took the opposite route.

Meeting somewhere around the halfway point, the simple stroll along the gravel pathway was a symbolic gesture of sorts. It represented the struggle that some of these people faced in their battle against cancer and the strength they received from their family and friends that helped them in their fight against the disease.
