Daniel Baumgartner

Monday, March 27, 2017

Daniel A. "Butch" Baumgartner passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017, quietly at his home in Mountain Home. He was 72.

Born to Thelma and Andrew Baumgartner, he is the eldest of four. He was an amazing son, brother, father and grandfather.

Born in San Jose, Calif., in 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school and fought for our country in Vietnam. His tours in Vietnam earned him a Purple Heart for his bravery and outstanding service to the United States.

After his service, he raised a family that included five children and proceeded to dedicate his life to his work and family. He was a jack of many trades but spent most of his life in the roofing business, climbing to the top of many companies before retiring after a massive heart attack in '90s.

Daniel was a hard worker with an intimidating presence but a gentle soul. Family and friends who knew him knew that he was one of the most loving, caring men that you could ever meet.

With a joke or a sarcastic quip at every turn, he never failed to make any social event better or cheer up a person in need. He was one of the easiest people to talk to and knowledgeable on many topics.

In his younger years, he loved to hunt and fish and overall enjoyed nature any chance he got. In his later years, he preferred to take a drive into the deep mountains of Idaho instead, enjoying nature peacefully.

He also loved his family dearly and loved to spend time playing card games, board games, watching movies or sightseeing in nature with them.

Daniel would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. Any given day, you could find him helping at local businesses, a friend that needed something done, helping a family member in need or sitting and keeping some of the old guys' company at the coffee shops. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends and remembered for his words of wisdom, unique humor, and loving, giving heart.

He is survived by his three siblings, Marty Baumgartner, Sally Adney and Carol Kemp; his mother, Thelma; daughter Amber Baumgartner and grandchildren Samantha Taylor and Andrew Baumgartner, all of which will miss him and loved him very dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, and following at 2 p.m., Daniel's ashes will be placed in the wall at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise to help celebrate his life and honor his death. Cremation was under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel.
