A breach of an irrigation canal west of Glenns Ferry temporarily cut off water to farmers across the eastern half of the county while flooding a portion of Highway 30.

The breach was reported around 3 p.m. Thursday after a reported failure in the canal ditch, which measures 16 feet wide and about eight feet deep.

Water and mud washed down the canal bank and washed out an 80-foot stretch of the local highway, said Cliff Lisle, manager of the King Hill Irrigation District, which oversees the canal.
