What does city really want?

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Dear editor,

Family Rec Center or Skate Park?

The Western Elmore County Recreation District was created in 2000 for the explicit purpose to build a family recreation facility. The current directors are entering into a partnership with the city to build a skate park at Legacy Park.

I am impressed that the city wants to partner with the recreation district, but according to the city's 2008 Master Plan, the city was to "Continue to work with the Recreation District to provide a Multi-purpose community Recreational Center."

What happened to that idea?

One of the councilmen said that the skate park is part of the Master Plan by Parks and Rec. There has been no public hearing about this project, and citizens are concerned about the location, the cost and the little benefit to the whole community.

Why does the WECRD board want to give away all of the money intended for a family recreation center? Why is the City Council so ready to take the money?
