Surrounded by her family, friends and coaches, a Mountain Home High School soccer standout signed a letter of intent to play for Western State Colorado University last Wednesday.

Christa Lewis, who will go on to play with the Mountaineers at the Gunnison, Colo., university, said it represents a long-time dream and a new journey.

Lewis started playing competitive soccer when she was about eight years old. This year, she was recognized as a standout player, both on her soccer club's team and the high school team.

"Her strength is her self-belief and that self-belief is what sets her apart from the rest of us," said Mountain Home High School soccer coach Curtis Viall.

The letter of intent also comes with a $4,500 a year scholarship that will help pay a portion of the school fees. Her parents, Kathryn and Randy Lewis, said they were extremely happy about the financial help but will be sad their daughter will be so far away.

While Lewis is excited about playing Division II soccer, getting a degree and academics is just as important, she said. Her plans are to pursue a career as an athletic trainer while at university but also has set a goal to join the World Cup team and move on to become a professional soccer player.

"I have the heart, drive and energy to get on the world cup team, finish my degree and do pretty much anything I want and so do all my teammates at this school," Lewis said.

Her older sister, Jennifer Lewis, was extremely proud of her sister and knows she has the skills to go far in life and especially in the soccer world.

"In our house, we don't say Christa plays soccer like a boy. We say boys play soccer like Christa," said Jennifer Lewis, who attended the signing ceremony.
