Wrestling squad pins wins at Calhoun Classic event

Mountain Home High School's wrestling team pinned top honors with six of its wrestlers making it to the final rounds during the Calhoun Classic Tournament, held Friday and Saturday in Nyssa, Ore.

Mountain Home earned 184 points during the two-day event to beat out the 21 other teams at the tournament.

Others in the top 10 were Nyssa with 168 points, Kuna at 141, Fruitland had 133.0, Caldwell earned 88, Jerome had 85, Homedale finished with 79.50, New Plymouth claimed 58, Skyview received 53.00 and Ontario had 52. Leading the varsity wrestlers at the event was Pierce Mederios, who won in the 113-pound weight class. Second-place honors went to Hunter McCluskey in the 106, Kanoa Doronio at 120, Jaden Sexton in the 170, Taylor Ogaard at 182 and Jose Ortiz in the 285-pound class.

Finishing third during the varsity rounds of the tournament were Tyler Hardin in the 138 weight class and Jonathan Kaiser at 285. Fourth-place honors went to Zach Slack in the 126 division and Brad Keierleber at 152 pounds.

"All of our guys contributed to the team placing first," said coach Lynn Knudson. "We wrestled well in the semi-finals matches."

Meanwhile, Mountain Home's junior varsity team finished five overall at the tournament, trailing Caldwell, Kuna, Nyssa and Parma.

The JV's top wrestlers included Gavin Hazell, who finished first in the 106-pound weight class. Second-place honors went to Hunter Thornburg in the 126-pound weight class, Austin Tetrault at 145 and Michael Hopson in the 285. Meanwhile, Juan Rangel finished fourth in the 220-pound weight class.
