To American Legion Post #26

I am writing this letter to you to commend you on your trip to the 5th grade class at Hacker Middle School. In recent years, patriotism has taken a "sock in the jaw" nationwide, but there has been an increase, thankfully, in the sincerity from people toward veterans.

It was outstanding of you to go to the children of Hacker and explain the meaning of the words "allegiance" and "republic." As you know, some people have tried taking the Pledge of Allegiance out of school because the phrase "under God" is in it. But again, that's part of our Constitution, our country and our lifeblood.

The flag folding, I'm ashamed to admit, was new to me as well as the 13 folds and steps. I didn't know any of the symbolism associated with each fold.

I firmly believe that should be a yearly educational and patriotic practice to teach the youngsters the importance of respect to the flag, the necessity of standing up when our flag passes on parade -- with hands over our hearts and hats off.

That would be a real treat to see the youngsters learn what it means to respect the one symbol of ours that goes to war; is on tanks, ships, planes and uniforms; it's a standard that the whole world knows and recognizes. It would be a wonderful practice for all the American Legion posts U.S.-wide to practice teaching our youngsters the importance of our flag -- the colors and stars and stripes and what they mean.

As a local business owner and woman and wife of a deceased Marine, I was exceedingly proud of what you have done and felt the need to share with others your lessons to the kids, I wanted to thank you from another American who loves her country and our wonderful veterans.

Thank you, and with great respect.

Editor's note: Representatives with American Legion Post 26 will hold a ceremony June 14 in which the local veterans group will retire damaged or worn American flags. The dignified flag burning ceremony in Carl Miller Park will coincide with this year's Flag Day observance.
