Tennis team beats Jerome in debut

The Mountain Home Tigers opened their tennis season last week with a couple of matches with the boys squad picking up its first win at Jerome.

The Mountain Home Tigers opened their tennis season Friday at home against the Wood River Wolverines and lost the girls match, 5-2, and the boys match, 6-1.

Mountain Home's wins in the girls match came in first singles and second doubles. Kira Anderson won her singles match, 6-3, 6-4, and the Mountain Home second doubles team of Mellinna Grimmius and Mady McCurdy won, 6-1, 6-0.

In other girls singles matches, Tia Senger dropped a tough three-set match at second, 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 with a 7-10 tie breaker, and Mariah Butori lost the third match, 6-7, 1-6 with a 4-7 tie breaker. In first girls doubles, Kaycee Crockett and Samantha Scobee lost, 3-6, 2-6.

In boys matches, Mountain Home's lone win came at the second doubles match as Jarek Schetzle and Nathan Gibbons won, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 with a 13-11 tie breaker. Marc Pelletier and Toren Lombardo lost the first doubles match, 0-6, 0-6.

In boys singles, Brad Foreman dropped a 3-6, 4-6 match at first singles, Eddie Guadarrama lost the second match in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, while Thomas Fatzlinger lost the third match, 1-6, 0-6.

Mountain Home dropped both mixed doubles matches. Miguel Pelletier and Samantha Feekes lost the first match, 3-6, 1-6, and Alex Bucholz and Kierianna Chavez lost the second match, 4-6, 6-7 with a 5-7 tie breaker.

"Although the team score does not show it, many of the 12 individual matches were very close and competitive. They could have gone either way," said Tigers tennis coach Tamzy House.

The Mountain Home boys picked up their first win of the season Saturday, downing the Jerome Tigers, 5-1, at Jerome. The Mountain Home girls fought hard but lost, 5-2.

In girls' matches, Kira Anderson dropped a close 4-6, 4-6 match in the first singles. Tia Senger lost the second match, 6-7, 4-6 with a 4-7 tie breaker, and Rhyan Kelley dropped a close 3-6, 4-6 match in the third.

In girls doubles, Kaycee Crockett and Samantha Scobee lost the first doubles match, 2-6, 1-6, and Melinna Grimmius and Danika Counts lost the second match, 3-6, 1-6.

In boys singles, Brad Foreman won the first match, 6-1, 6-0, while freshman Eddie Guadarrama won his first varsity match, 6-2, 6-4, at second. Both teams forfeited the third singles match.

In boys doubles, Marc Pelletier and Toren Lombardo dropped the first match, 3-6, 3-6, and Jarek Schetzle and Miguel Pelletier won the second, 6-2, 6-0. Mountain Home won both mixed doubles matches. Nate Gibbons and Mariah Butori took the first match, 6-0, 6-2, and Thomas Fatzlinger and Mady McCurdy won the second match, 6-1, 6-0.

The Tigers head to Bishop Kelly for a conference match with the Knights on Thursday, March 19.
