Letter to the Editor

Buy your gasoline somewhere else

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Dear editor:

The Nation Gas Prices show that Idaho has an overall average fuel price of $2.047 per gallon statewide.

I would like to encourage all residents of Mountain Home to please stop purchasing fuel in town.

We, as local residents of Mountain Home, are being ripped off just as the interstate travelers our who pass through our community.

In Twin Falls you can purchase fuel for $1.89 per gallon. In Boise you can purchase unleaded fuel for well under the $2.047 state average at almost any gas station. The average price for a gallon of fuel in Mountain Home is $2.35 per gallon.

The only way that we can force a change in this greed is to STOP purchasing fuel in town. In Burley, you can purchase fuel for $1.89 per gallon.

  • This letter was sent in last week prior to the drop from $2.35 per gallon to $1.99 after all the local residents voiced there opinon on Facebook and letters to the state government and local mayors office. The media was a huge driver of the adjustment in local fuel prices to be more competitive with area wide fuel distributers.

  • Stan, I find myself in the same boat as you are. I have always said that I keep it local whenever I can justify it. But paying $2.04 in town compared to $1.85 anywhere I look in Boise ($1.78 at Fred Meyer), I refuse to pay. What is odd is that on my way to Boise the other day, the price in town was $2.05 and the price at the Chevron at exit 90 was $1.99. Just the opposite of what is normal, usually the "Freeway" prices are high and in town is cheaper. In this day and age, everyone has a free Gas app handy. It seems like it would be beneficial to drop your prices in town to draw people off I-84, help yourself as a station owner as well as a few other businesses that buyers are driving past. You have to get people into town if we want them buying in the town.

  • It isn't just gas that gets the residents of Mountain Home. McDonalds doesn't give us the prices that Boise and surrounding areas do. They make up their own prices and have no $1 dollar menu. Looked at buying soil and it was over 50% higher than getting it in Boise, lumber and the list just gets bigger of why I will not support local business's.
