Ella Cottle cradles a miniature version of baby Jesus as she got a closer look at a nativity display in the main hallway.

Abby Cottle stared at the wooden figures clustered together in the church's main hallway. With her older sisters urging the youngster to take a closer look, she reached out and touched the figurine wrapped in a blanket lying on top of a small pile of straw.

The two-year-old stepped away as her sister, Ella, sat down on the burlap sack in front of the display. Reaching for the same figure, she carefully picked it up cradled it in her arms.

The children were still too young to understand the significance that tiny figure represented -- the symbol of a child born in a stable more than 2,000 years ago.

Cheryl Fesperman and her husband, Brad, explain the significance of the Christ child to their daughter, Ashlynn. The couple portrayed the holy family as part of a live nativity scene during this year's Christmas creche.
