P&Z votes to recommend recreation center's permit

Friday, December 5, 2014

Plans to build a community recreation center in Mountain Home took another step forward as the city's planning and zoning commission voted in favor of the project.

During a meeting Monday evening, the board unanimously recommended approving a conditional use permit submitted by the Western Elmore County Recreation District regarding the 23,000 square foot facility.

  • Thank you so much.............. Vultures. Boise architects and YMCA raping our tax dollars. Next will come the Boise contractor. Lets simplify this and just send them a check and call it good.

I'll give 2 to 1 that this project (if started) will be given to a Boise contractor that is low bid, and then end up going 15-20% over budget.

  • Personally, I don't care whether the contractor ends up being from Mountain Home, Boise, Arizona, New Jersey, whatever. As long as they have a proven track record as far as quality and reputation, and they stay within the agreed amount. I think too much emphasis is placed on keeping everything local (Dude, not implying that is where you were going, it is just my 2 cents). We have seen how Mountain Home merchants charge more than Boise competitors for the exact same items because they assume we are held captive (or abide by some local good old boys agreement), hopefully the contractors wouldn't use that same mentality. And if they do, then weed them out.

  • I understand that many local consumers feel merchants in the area over charge, but that is not where I was going. Large Boise contractors are very very knowledgeable on how to hold their customer captive once a low bid has been accepted and construction has begun. They prey on organizations such the WECRD, Churches, and other groups that are not experienced in the construction industry. Going in, they have already identified all the mistakes made by the architect, and have their change orders sitting in the top drawer of their desk. These change orders can cost an inexperienced customer dearly.

You refer to the local good old boy agreement that a lot of folks like to refer to. Let me tell you, there is nothing more dangerous and potentially costly than the good old boy agreement between Boise organizations (YMCA for example), Boise architects, and Boise Construction Companies. Ask the Catholic Church.

The WECRD Board managing a construction project of this size, and the potential of them dealing with the Boise Good Old Boys could be a bomb ready to explode, and the Boise boys just going home leaving the tax payers to clean up the mess.

To date I have read, the community has received approx. $20,000 a year for several years for youth sports etc. The Boise community has received much much more than this. Lets not be their play ground.

  • In the paper it states the facility will include a full size gymnasium, child watch and youth centers, a multipurpose exercise studio, state of the art fitness equipment, and game area for youth.

    Further on down reading

"I feel passionate about what the Y can bring to our youth, our SENIORS and especially our Families" Borgholthaus said.

She cited a list of advantages to having a Y and its programs in the community, including less juvenile delinquency, fewer teen pregnancies and more high school graduates.

WOW!! If this facility is going to stop all of the above mention, we should of had one build years ago.

Where do the Seniors fit in? Gymnasium, exercise equipment, child watch or the game area?

The facility will be run by the Treasure Valley YMCA...

  • MsMarylin,

Where do the seniors fit in? Your check book will be enough.

  • Just look at the new Dog House the City is building for half a million dollars. All contractors take advantage of idiots.
