Solar project near airport moves forward

Wednesday, November 12, 2014
The 20 megawatt solar energy complex is planned for a section of land next to the city airport.

After a nearly 3 1/2 year delay, a solar energy project at the city airport is once again showing signs of moving forward.

During a meeting Oct. 27, a representative from the Boise-based Sunergy World company briefed the city council on the current progress of the Mountain Home solar facility.

Originally proposed in early 2011, the alternative energy generating facility is expected to produce up to 20 megawatts of electricity.

I understood that this project is next to the airport. Isn't that Ada county?

As for "junk science" -- solar power does work. The main problem is that most of these solar projects cost more to run than the cost to run a natural gas powered electrical generating plant. So, they generally need some deep-pocketed users who prefer to pay higher energy prices in return for a presumably ecologically safer technology. Right now apparently cheaper panels from China are flooding the market. What happens five years from now when US manufacturers are all out of business and we need spare parts? It's a great idea whose time will come but we can do better. Back to the drawing board, please.

  • Along with being a great alternative energy source this should bring a lot of jobs to Elmore County.
