Lady Tigers prepare for Saturday's season debut

Mountain Home opens its girls soccer schedule Saturday on the road with a non-conference game at Borah against the 5A Lady Lions.

Although the numbers could have been better, Lady Tiger soccer coach Kent Ogaard likes the quality of the players he has out for soccer this year.

"The numbers are kind of low. It rises and falls with each year, and you never know until you see your tryouts," he said. "But we've got a decent real strong squad for varsity. We've got 18 players suited and JV will have anywhere from 15 to 16 players, enough to certainly field some competition."

Coach Ogaard likes the mix of players on this year's squad.

"We've got a pretty good mix of players and a pretty young varsity team right now," he said. "We have about six or seven returning varsity players and then we've got several that came up from JV and helped us during the districts lasts year, so we have a wide range of experience coming up, and our varsity program is looking to fulfill those dreams we've been waiting for of a district championship and showing well.

"That's our goal, and hopefully we can accomplish it," the coach added.

The Southern Idaho Conference 4A has decreased from nine teams down to six this year, with Nampa and Columbia moving up to 5A, and Emmett down to 3A.

Coach Ogaard believes Mountain Home will hold its own in the district, and likes the fact that they will have several non-conference games before they open conference play.

"As we look at our schedule, I think it's turned out in our favor," he said. "We're going to be able to tune up and work out some kinks with our first five games being out of conference, so we hope to be ready and have the kinks worked out and teamwork working well, as long as we keep everybody healthy."
