Commissioners not expected to help subsidize local bus

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

With public bus services in Mountain Home facing cuts starting Monday, a last-minute funding request submitted to the county commissioners was not expected to move forward.

"I don't think we have the money this year," said Commissioner Al Hofer.

Earlier this month, the Treasure Valley bus company approached the commissioners with the $25,000 budget request. The money would've tied in with additional subsidies from Mountain Home for the new fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

  • Those behemoth busses need to be replaced with smaller passenger vans. All I ever see is one or two people in them at one time. Most times when I see them they're empty. That is a large waste of money. People who do ride them want them kept but there aren't enough of them to justify the cost to everyone else. Why won't they try smaller vans?

  • It has been wonderful having the services of Treasure Valley Transit for those individuals who are in need of transportation assistance. However, there are so many other needs of the County and City that need to be addressed with the monies available. I would prefer to see the $25,000.00 be spent to upgrade infrastructure, properly equip and support law enforcement or the fire fighters, etc.

    Just my two cents,

  • I have several senior friends and this bus is their only means of transportation. I can understand something smaller but wouldn't that mean purchasing new vehicles when they already have the busses available. Not sure how that works but please don't cut this out for our seniors and handicapped individuals. It always comes down to money but hope their will be some kind of alternative.

  • Can I have my property tax money that is being wasted on the "wreck" district transferred over to help the transit company?

At least it will be put to good use there...
