Lewis and Clark exhibit slated for September at public library

Friday, August 16, 2013
Artifacts from the Nez Perce Tribe will be on display during the upcoming library event.

A Lewis and Clark trunk, a Nez Perce trunk, and a Lewis and Clark panel exhibit will be on display at the Mountain Home Public Library during the month of September as a part of the Idaho at 150 "Let's Talk About It" project.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the exhibit will bring a part of the Idaho State Historical Museum to Mountain Home.

Museum pieces in one trunk include replicas of items on Lewis's inventory list of equipment used during the Lewis and Clark voyage of discovery. The focus of the trunk centers around the Corps of Discovery's journal writing, plant identification, and map-making activities during their trip through Idaho. The Corps of Discovery was the official name of the expedition.

The culture of the Nez Perce, who saved the expedition, is featured in the second traveling trunk of artifacts. The Is'aaptekay, a Nez Perce term for Indian suitcase or parfleche, which typically held dry goods, depicts what men and women would have used for work or leisure time around the period that Lewis and Clark arrived in the Idaho territory. All items included in that trunk are contemporary pieces selected for and hand made by Nez Perce tribal members.

The panel exhibit summarizes the expedition from 1803 to 1806. The story is laid out in a captioned narrative with great graphics. A section even provides insight into the qualities Lewis and Clark sought as they recruited for the Corps of Discovery.

The Idaho State Historical Museum's collection provides an in-depth look at Lewis and Clark's 93-day trek through Idaho.

Book club

Also in conjunction with the "Let's Talk About It" project and Traveling Trunks Exhibit, the library's proposed new book club will "circle the wagons and get to shootin'..."

Participants who indicated interest from a sign-up sheet generated a month ago are being invited to attend an informal meeting tonight, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at the library to discuss startup of the new reading group.

Anyone who has questions about the club or who would like to participate should call the circulation desk at 587-4716 for information.

The Mountain Home Public Library has been selected as one of only 15 libraries throughout the state to participate in the Idaho Commission for Libraries' "Let's Talk About It" project for 2013-2014.

The theme is "Idaho at 150." Every three weeks, beginning in mid-September and running through mid-December, the library will host a discussion night led by a humanities scholar provided by the Idaho Commission for Libraries.

The first book discussion in September will be held in conjunction with the special traveling exhibit on the Lewis Clark expedition.

Reading copies for participants will include the following book titles: "The Truth About Sacajawea," "Undaunted Courage," "Home Below Hell's Canyon," "Traplines" and "In The Wilderness."

"Let's Talk About It" is a reading discussion program for libraries launched on a nationwide level in 1982 by the American Library Association. The library and its co-sponser of the project, the Friends of the Library, are also working on other program events which will be presented, in addition to the book discussions, which will highlight Idaho's heritage.
