Public access closed to C.J. Strike Dam, spillway

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Idaho Power has closed public access to the face of C.J. Strike Dam and the spillway, citing security and public safety.

Access was restricted last year due to sturgeon population monitoring, and later because of repairs being made to a spill gate.

After careful consideration, the decision was made to permanently close access to the facility, Idaho Power officials announced this week.

"For some time, federal regulatory agencies -- as well as Idaho Power personnel -- have expressed concern for public safety and facility security at C.J. Strike. The company's decision to close access is in alignment with regulations at other facilities nationwide," said Kevin Winslow, Idaho Power communications specialist.

"Idaho Power understands this area is a popular spot for anglers. However, the company believes that extensive improvements made to the parks, boating facilities, and the C.J. Strike Wildlife Management Area will continue to provide ample fishing opportunities," he added.

Do they have any incidences of public safety and facility security to back there reasoning for closing it off? I mean I get the sturgeon monitoring and repairs, but serisously it has been open to the public for years. Why now?
