Senior Celebration group meets

Thursday, January 24, 2013

With roughly four months left in the school year, parents of Mountain Home High School's graduating class met this week to outline initial plans for this year's senior celebration.

Continuing a tradition hosted by the parents of each graduating class since 1984, the senior celebration offers what event organizers call an alcohol-free, drug-free, safe, sane and fun party the night of graduation.

In 2012, approximately 130 students representing last year's graduating class attended the senior celebration. Many of them brought up to two guests to the party.

More than 30 parents representing students from the Class of 2013 packed into the high school's library Jan. 22 to choose individuals willing to lead the effort. During their initial discussion, the parents agreed they needed feedback from the senior class on what they wanted in terms of location and scheduled events before plans were set in motion. School officials will collect that feedback during a survey sent to high school seniors in coming days.

Discussions at the Jan. 22 meeting also dealt with proposed fundraisers the parent committee needed to schedule in coming weeks. Those events will help pay for food, prizes and other expenses during the May 24 celebration.

According to Shannon Reed, who helped organize last year's event, parents typically raise about $20,000 a year through various fund raisers.

The senior celebration group invites parents to its next meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the high school library. For more information, call the high school at 587-2570.
