  • I saw on the channel 7 news that Ada County has made its Sheriff's Department a smoke free force (on or off duty) and that Ada County is considering expanding this no-smoking rule into other departments. Maybe we should consider that approach, the Ada County folks express the no-smoking rule is aimed at improving employee health, reducing sick days and health costs. With that in mind maybe the work rule should be expanded to require emergency services people to be within their desired weight range. Being overweight or obese causes a lot of chronic health issues such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, and cardio-vascular disease. All these contribute to huge health insurance claims and lost time from work. There is more than one obese police officer on the MHPD team. These costs are paid for by the taxpayers.

I also love the no-smoking policy...Not so much. I smoke like a chimney, yes it is bad for me, but on the same hand I am 6 foot 165 lbs and run 5 miles every other day in less than 40 minutes. But according to Ada County I am not qualified because I am a health risk.
