UPDATE: Base homes to begin transfer to Nevada tribe

Thursday, December 15, 2011
Originally part of the Desert Vista neighborhood at Mountain Home Air Force Base, 15 of the single-story homes will see new life as they begin their move from the installation here to the Ely-Shoshone Tribe in eastern Nevada. Part of Operation Walking Shield, the federal program aims to address overcrowding and homeless issues involving Native American tribes in several western states.

Fifteen housing units at Mountain Home Air Force Base will begin their trek across the state Friday as part of a federal program aimed at helping a tribe in eastern Nevada.

After leaving the base, oversized trailers carrying these housing units will travel on Highway 51 and use Airbase Road and Highway 30 to reach the interstate at the Exit 99 onramp, according to Reed Henderson from the state transportation department.

Drivers may face some traffic delays associated with these convoys.

The transfer of these modular homes is part of Operation Walking Shield -- an ongoing initiative aimed at addressing chronic overcrowding and homeless situations facing those living on reservations across the western United States. Homes from the base are heading to the Ely-Shoshone Tribe in Ely, Nev.
