YMCA, WECRD back on track for community center

Thursday, October 27, 2011

After a "lost year" of delays during which little was accomplished, the combined effort by the Western Elmore County Recreation District and the Treasure Valley YMCA to build a community center in Mountain Home appears to be getting back on track this week.

Jim Everett, president and chief executive officer of the Treasure Valley Y, said he expects to begin sending out invitations this week to community leaders asking them to participate in a committee to oversee a capital campaign feasibility study.

That study will determine if there is sufficient opportunity to raise just under $1 million to supplement existing funds available to the WECRD and begin Phase I of the project. That phase would involve a center with gyms, meeting rooms and fitness faciltiies -- essentially the full community center except an indoor swimming pool, which would be built in Phase II.

  • Another study?????? If I remember right, these studies cost money....money which I am sure the WECRD has to fork out via the tax payer. At the meetings last year, it was clear that it would be EXTREMELY difficult to raise the money to build it, and even more difficult to find the funds to maintain the facility. I may be wrong, but I think the YMCA is benefitting from this somehow!!!!

I keep out of it mostly, but I agree with bloodyknuckles. If we didn't need another study costing money, after the other studies costing money, maybe the money would be already there.

But I didn't do a study to back myself up. In these times, when people are struggling, maybe we should just sit back and keep being taxed (since it appears we are going to anyway) and the money will be there later. We are throwing good money after bad, or vice versa.

To clarify, (don't get me wrong) I think a Rec Center would be cool. Heck I'd love to have my own indoor riding arena. But I can't afford one. See the similarity?

I offer for people to come and ride at fun activities all the time. For free. Not one reader has EVER taken me up on it. EVER. So, it's not physical recreation that is needed. It's incentive...ambition.... the will do get off a shiny hiney and do something.

  • Still trying to get the therapeutic pool that so few people in western Elmore County need, to be built be an organization that most of us can't afford a membership to, in a building bought and paid for by property taxes. When is the Wasting Elmore County Resource committee going to quit piddling away my hard earned tax dollars? I've lived in some large towns in my life time, and seen YMCAs fail. This town really isn't big enough to support it, therefore, why do they keep trying to cram it down our throats???

Since the start of this night mare there has been thousands spent on each survey and there has been a few of them. None of them said it would work the way they (WECRD) wanted it to. So instead of giving up start another group of people to talk about it and do another survey.

The YMCA is being paid lots of money each month to advise the WECRD and I can't see where that is working either. The "Y" did their thing in Caldwell and those people came here to tell us how great it was but low and behold the Y over there is in trouble also and they have alot more people to spend money on it.

This is a taxing district and when the finally nail goes into the IF building we will still be taxed to paid for it. Caldwell doesn't have a taxing district for theirs.

The money wasted here could have done alot for recreation but just hasn't happened. Maybe 15 percent of the district wants this nightmare with pools and they will still have to pay to use it, while the tax payers keep getting taxed to have it. Another good way to spend our tax dollars they act more like the FEDERAL Government every day and nobody to watch over what they do.

  • It is nice to see that others share the same opinions as I do. I ask each and every one of you to please attend the meetings(if they ever have them again) and voice your concern. I know I have and at the very least I can sit back and know I have done what I can to let the WECRD and the Y know how I as well as others feel. This is out of hand and needs some serious public pressure and attention if we will ever get a handle on it! It can be done! It just takes numbers!

  • Oh and Jessie, I will take you up on the horse riding anytime. I think my kids would love it!

  • Why doesn't the WECRD have the urban development committee fix up Kings for a Rec center/Youth center. That would take care of some of our local issues. The kids could use it after school and adults all day long. The WECRD board could be disbanded and our tax dollars could go to operation of the facility.

Otherwise the Kings purchase will end up being another waste of tax dollars. And after its up remodeled and up to code it'll be sold to some local investor for pennies on the dollar and then resold for a profit
