Hawks claw Tigers during 59-14 victory

Thursday, September 15, 2011

The Skyview Hawks scored early and often on their way to a 59-14 rout of the Mountain Home Tigers Friday night at Skyview High School in Nampa.

The Hawks received the ball to start the game, but the Tigers had a good start defensively, forcing a punt after three downs.

Mountain Home started its first drive on its own 28 and Jake Hennessey connected with Michael Daniels on a 32-yard pass play to the Skyview 40-yard-line, but that would be the best offensive play for Mountain Home in the first half.

Between penalties, sacks, fumbles and tackles for loss, the Tigers were unable to muster much offense at all in the first half.

The Hawks would score on their next possession, going 67 yards in eight plays, Jacob Shaddox, taking it the final 16 yards for the score. The PAT by Chase Liljegren was no good, and the Hawks led 6-0 with 5:09 left in the first half.

The Tigers started their second possession on their own 17, but three plays later, Jake Hennessey was sacked in the end zone for a safety and the Hawks led, 8-0, with 3:35 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers then kicked the ball back to Skyview and Anthony Bellsario returned it 55 yards to the Mountain Home 15. Three plays later, Zach Treinen hit Walker Ray on an 11-yard touchdown pass. The point-after try by Chase Liljegren was again no good, but the Hawks continued to lead by 14 with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers went three-and-out and punted the ball back to Skyview and they took over at the 50. Mountain Home got the ball back when Jake Hennessey intercepted a pass, but the Tigers then fumbled the ball back to Skyview at the Tiger eight-yard-line.

Tanner Robison then took the ball eight yards for a touchdown. Chase Liljegren hit the PAT to make it 21-0 Skyview with 11:06 left in the first half.

The Tigers started their next series on their 11 and three plays later the Hawks recorded another safety, to up their lead to 23-0 with 10:06 left in the half.

The Hawks received the ensuing kick and moved the ball down to the Mountain Home nine-yard-line before settling for a 25-yard field goal by Chase Liljegren to increase their lead to 26-0 with 7:01 left in the half.

Skyview upped its lead to 40-0 before the Tigers finally got into the end zone following a 68-yard kickoff return by Robert Jackio to the Skyview 23-yard-line, with a five-yard facemask penalty tacked on the end.

The Tigers got into the end zone on a one-yard run by Jake Hennessey, who then passed to Alex Rodriguez for the two-point conversion to make it, 40-8, with 1:31 remaining in the opening half.

Mountain Home received the ball to start the second half and moved the ball 69 yards in nine plays, Jake Hennessey taking it in from eight yards out. The two-point run attempt failed and Skyview led 40-14 with 8:55 left in the third quarter.

The Hawks answered with a scoring drive of their own, going 75 yards in six plays, Zach Treinen connected with Walker Ray on a 63-yardtouchdown pass. The PAT was no good, but the Hawks increased their lead to 46-14, with 7:42 left in the third quarter.

Mountain Home would not score again the rest of the night, but the Hawks added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make it a 59-14 final.

Tiger head football coach Brian Floyd was hoping for a better effort by his team Friday night.

"It was an after-shock from the second quarter of last week," the coach said. "We had missed assignments -- I thought we took a step backwards. They can play hard and do what we ask them to do, and do it very well. We have good team speed and all these things here and there, but a lot of it comes down to not making the play. That's frustrating to us and I know it's frustrating to the kids, too.

"It's not one-sided. We all need to work harder and work as a team and get some unity going here," the Mountain Home coach added.

The Tigers, sacked six times and tackled 11 times for losses, managed just 26 yards on 43 rushes. J.T. Cristobal rushed for 39 yards on one carry, Alex Rodriguez rushed two times for five yards, Tyler Knauth rushed five times for two yards, Robert Jackio rushed nine times for one yard, Juan Silva rushed five times for minus one yard, Ben Ceccarelli rushed twice for minus one yard and Jake Hennessey had 21 rushes for minus 19 yards and two touchdowns.

Hennessey completed six of 15 passes for 111 yards. Alex Rodriguez threw two passes, one of which was picked off for a touchdown.

Juan Silva caught three passes for 21 yards, Ben Ceccarelli caught one for 36 yards, Michael Daniels had one for 32 yards and Alex Rodriguez had one for 22 yards.

The Hawks rushed the ball 48 times for 307 yards, led by Tanner Robison who had 212 yards on 31 rushes. Zach Treinen threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He had two passes picked off.

Defensively, Skyler Podesek led the Tigers in tackles with 11 and had an interception. Alex Rodriguez and Ricky Castillo both had five tackles, Gage Curtis had four tackles and a fumble recovery, Tanner Cook and Colby Hall both had 3.5 tackles, Jake Hennessey had three tackles and an interception, Tyler Knauth, Luke Filipovich, Jeff Checketts and Dion Salinas each had two tackles, Ben Ceccarelli, Joe Gutierrez, Malcolm Freer and Mike Gordon each had 1.5 tackles and Robert Jackio, Jon Ryan, J.T. Cristobal and DJ Hale each had one tackle.

The Tigers are at Caldwell Friday night to take on the Caldwell Cougars in a conference contest. Coach Floyd hopes his guys can get their game together Friday night.

"We have the opportunity this week. Caldwell has taken their lumps as well early in the season," he said. "I'm sure they're working to get better, and we've got to work to get better. The team that does the best in this week of practice and comes together is going to have an edge on Friday night."

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
