Man hurt when his VW rear-ends semi

A 25-year-old Texas man was injured when he rear-ended a semi on the Hammett hill on I-84 Saturday.

According to Idaho State Police, Ernesto Madrigal, 49 of Paul, was traveling westbound in a 2007 Mack semi and was traveling uphill at a slow speed with his emergency lights on, when for unknown reasons, Quentin Schmieding, of Denton, Texas, driving a 2007 Volkswagon Jetta and who also was traveling westbound, struck Madrigal's vehicle in the rear.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. at milepost 108.

Schmieding was transported by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with what were described as non-life threatening injuries. Madrigal was not injured in the crash.

Seatbelts were worn by both drivers.

A dog belonging to Schmieding was taken to the Mountain Home Animal Shelter.

The right lane of travel was blocked for the crash investigation for approximately 2.5 hours.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.

ISP officers who handled the accident were assisted at the scene by Glenns Ferry Fire and Extrication, the Elmore County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Transportation Depatment.
