Man airlifted after strange wreck

Thursday, August 18, 2011
Rescue crews work on the victim of Thursday's crash.

It was one of the strangest accidents one Idaho State Police trooper had ever seen.

At about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Elmore County dispatcher sent sheriff's deputies to the scene of a single-vehicle accident at mile marker 132 (Power Plant overpass) east of Glenns Ferry. ISP also responded.

From what deputies and troopers could piece together at the scene, the driver of a newer model pickup truck was traveling eastbound on I-84 when, for reasons not yet known, the vehicle left the roadway, ran up the steep south embankment of the overpass, creased the metal guardrail on the southern approach to the overpass, then flew over Power Plant Road and landed at the base of the east side of the south approach of the overpass -- without rolling.

Initial reports indicated that the driver may have been partially ejected from the vehicle, but that has not been confirmed. He was taken by air ambulance, with non-life threatening injuries, to a Boise hospital.

The investigation is being handled by ISP. No further details are available at this time.
