UPDATE - Teen dies following Highway 20 crash

Thursday, June 30, 2011

A Boise teenager died following a two-vehicle collision Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 20 east of Mountain Home.

Kasey Hiatt, 15, was critically injured in the crash, which happened around 7:20 a.m. near milepost 124, located just below the Cat Creek summit, and she later succumbed to her injuries at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

According to Idaho State Police, Christy Pate, 39, of Boise was driving westbound on the highway in a 2001 Saturn passenger car. State police report that, for reasons still under investigation, she struck the rear of a slow-moving commercial crane truck driven by George Rodrigues of Mountain Home.

Pate was also flown by Life Flight to St. Alphonsus where she was treated and released. Rodrigues was not injured in the collision.

Both Pate and Hiatt, along with Rodrigues, were wearing their seatbelt, and airbags did deploy, state police reported. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Both lanes of the state highway were blocked for approximately three and a half hours while crews investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
