UPDATE: Sheriff offers theory in Rexburg man's death

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Elmore County Sheriff's Department officials said Thursday there are "no indications of foul play" surrounding the death of Grant Moedl, 57, of Rexburg.

Moedl, 57, had been missing since March 2 His body was found June 26 in his vehicle in the Mountain Home Reservoir.

In a prepared statement, the sheriff's office said that ""It appears Mr. Moedl drove off of Hwy 20 to the Mountain Home Reservoir for unknown reasons. Elmore County Sheriff's Office is checking into the possibility that Mr. Moedl's vehicle broke through the ice and trapped Mr. Moedl in the vehicle. This incident is still under investigation."

Moedl's family had believed he had been driving from Rexburg along Highway 20 when he disappeared on his way to Boise. Searches by law enforcement agencies and family along the roadway in the weeks after his disappearance had not identified any clues to his whereabouts until Sunday.

The roof of the silver 2008 Suburu Outback he was driving was spotted by a photographer working in the reservoir area.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Department has been working with the Rexburg Police Department in the investigation into the cause of his death.

The autopsy on Moedl was conducted Monday by the Ada County Coroner's office, with the preliminary results released Thursday, but results of all of the laboratory tests will not be known for several weeks.

  • Now, how did he get his car in there and maybe why? Sorrow and regret to have this happen to his family.
