Tax extension available in some cases

Those unable to file their individual income tax returns by Monday's deadline may qualify for an automatic six-month extension without filing a form.

To earn a valid extension and avoid paying a penalty, the total withholding and other payments must be at least 80 percent of the person's current year's tax liability or 100 percent of the total tax reported on their previous year's return.
