County sets hearings on Mayfield Townsite

Thursday, April 14, 2011

The Elmore County Board of Commissioners plan to hold a series of hearings next month to gather public input regarding plans to build a large-scale community west of Mountain Home.

Hearings on the Mayfield Townsite Planned Community begin at 6 p.m. May 3, 10 and 12 at the county courthouse.

If approved by the county commissioners, the planned community would encompass 5,000 acres of agricultural land north of the interstate at the border of Elmore and Ada counties.

During its proposed 50-year development, it would add another 15,000 dwelling units and nearly 37,500 more people to the county over the course of its proposed 50-year development. That's roughly twice the size of Mountain Home and similar in size to Eagle and Meridian.

Let's answer these questions. At a time when we should be cutting back this proposal will decrease everyones property values and increase taxes.

Do we have the water to support a town twice the size of Mountain Home? NO (And you thought your water bill went up a few months ago.)

Do we have a shortage of empty houses in and around Mountain Home? NO (in my area alone there are so many empties, I would move to Boise but I can't sell my house as there is not many buyers.)

Do we have the school and other facilities to handle a town with twice as many people? NO (Can you say another levy and bonds to pay for new schools.)

Were are all these new homeowners going to work? Boise doesn't have large industry moving in and we have a pretty large unemployed population already. Do you really think we will get even a IHOP or Denny's in mountain home.

This is a terriable plan and the only thing I can think if it passes is someone is getting their palms greased. I encourage everyone to attend these meetings unless you want to pay more taxes and would like your home prices to drop even more.
