C.J. Strike spillway bridge to be closed temporarily

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Idaho Power will close public access to the bridge above the spill gates at C.J. Strike Dam April 6 through June 30, as part of its fish monitoring in the area.

Visitors to Strike will still be able to use boat ramps and day use areas. Idaho Power encourages anglers, hunters and others using the area for recreational purposes to be aware of the spillway closure and adjust their activities if necessary.

"Safety is a value at Idaho Power, both for our employees and the customers we serve," Idaho Power spokesperson Stephanie McCurdy said.

"We are closing the spillway because a trailer will be parked on the deck to record data. This monitoring equipment will make public access difficult and hazardous."

"We know people who enjoy recreating at C.J. Strike are used to having access to the spillway," added Idaho Power Biologist Fred Noland. "We want to make sure they stay safe, and that's why we have to restrict access. We hope people will understand, and continue to visit the area both during the monitoring and after it is complete."

The company's fish conservation efforts began with the salmon and steelhead hatchery program, starting shortly after construction of Brownlee Dam more than 50 years ago.
