District not happy with ed plan changes

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Senate Bill 1113, Superintendent of Education Tom Luna's plan for the complete restructuring of education in Idaho, has been heavily rewritten by lawmakers in the Idaho Legislature, but local school district officials said that what they call "Son of 1113" is, in some ways, worse than the original plan.

The rewritten legislation restores support units -- the basic number used to fund school districts by the state -- to their original ratio of 18.2 students per unit from Luna's proposed increase of 19.8 students per unit, but the tradeoff was a reduction in the amount of money allocated by the state for each support unit.

Functionally, local school district officials said, it still means the district will face a shortfall of approximately $1 million this year.
