Crash closes westbound lanes of I-84

Thursday, March 17, 2011

A single-vehicle crash just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night on I-84 sent the driver of a semi to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and blocked the westbound lanes of the interstate until early Thursday morning.

Traffic was diverted to the old Highway 30 at exits 99 and 112 until about 8 a.m. Thursday.

The incident occurred at milepost 107 when Danny Guntrum, 39, of Nampa, who was driving 2008 Beall tanker truck pulling one trailer, loaded with gasoline and diesel fuel, failed to negotiate a curve. The tanker left the roadway and drove off the left shoulder down a slope into the median where it overturned, spilling the fuel it was carrying.

Elmore County Sheriff's Office deputies and county extrication crews arrived on scene and pulled the driver from the cab area. He was covered in fuel at the time.

Guntrum was then taken by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise with serious head injuries.

Idaho State Police said approximately 3,000 gallons of fuel were spilled, while local fire department sources estimated the spill at a much larger 10,000 gallons, based on the fact both tanks of fuel had ruptured and emptied.

Elmore County Fire, Mountain Home Air Force Base fire crews, and Boise HazMat teams responded to contain the spill.

The westbound lanes of travel were completely blocked at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation by Idaho State Police, Elmore County deputies, fire and EMS personnel.

  • Danny Guntrum has survived this accident. Looking at the pictures, it is clear that God had a hand in this miracle. 4 Witnesses and 911 tapes report that a car allegedly ran the semi off the road. Danny has been cleared of all charges. If anyone has any information about the other car that may have been involved, please contact februarydiamond.melony@yahoo.com

    Thank You.
