Wrestlers pick up win at Middleton, place 5th at Parma

The Mountain Home Tigers picked up a conference dual win at Middleton last Thursday night, and finished fifth at the Parma Tournament over the weekend.

Tigers 48, Vikings 35

The Tigers went to Middleton last Thursday and came away with a 48-35 conference dual match win over the Vikings.

Picking up wins by pins were Devonte McClain in the 125 pound weight class, Cory Pinque at 130 and Ty McRae at 285.

Picking up forfeit wins were Nick Cruz at 135, Sergio Guadarrama at 171 and Jeff Checketts at 215.

Erwin Ruiz lost an 8-7 decision at 160 pounds, Jon Ryan lost a major decision at 189, Aerial Groene lost by technical fall (15-0) at 112, Austin Clark lost by technical fall (19-4) at 145 and Jaime Ibarra (103) and Austin Lucas (119) lost by pins.

The Tigers took 12 wrestlers to Parma for the Parma Bracket Tournament over the weekend, where they ended up fifth.

The Tigers had four wrestlers place at the Parma tourney.

Devonte McClain and Cory Pinque both went 4-0 and took first place, McClain at 125 pounds and Pinque at 130.

Ty McRae went 3-1 and finished second, losing the championship match. Ryan Goldsby went 3-1 and finished third at 140 pounds.

Other Tigers that wrestled at Parma and their won-loss records were: Sergio Guadarrama (171), who went 3-2; Austin Lucas (119), 2-2; Nick Cruz (135), 2-2; Jaime Ibarra (103), 1-2, Ariel Groene (112), 1-2, and Jeff Checketts (215), 1-2.

Erwin Ruiz wrestled at 152 pounds and won his first match, but then went out with an injury in his second match.

"It was a good confidence builder for us," said Tiger wrestling coach Lynn Knudson after their effort against Parma. "We really worked on just some basic things this last week and worked on our weaknesses and I think that helped us out a lot, so I was really pleased."

The Tigers wrestle Bishop Kelly at home Thursday night for Senior Night and go to the Minico Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
