UPDATE: Flooding hits Glenns Ferry, section of interstate

Monday, January 17, 2011

Flooding associated with this weekend's rain showers prompted the evacuation of a handful of homes in Glenns Ferry on Monday morning with water affecting a section of the interstate.

Little Canyon Creek in Glenns Ferry breached its banks, flooding properties on both sides of the creek in the north and south sides of town.

Meanwhile, flood waters crossed over the westbound lane of I-84 between mileposts 117 and 118 with motorists urged to use caution when driving through this area.

Rising waters fed by Sunday's rain showers triggered flooding in the Glenns Ferry area.

According to county dispatchers, rising waters earlier in the day threatened three or four homes in Glenns Ferry. The canal is fed by Morrow Reservoir about two miles north of the community.

At least one resident with an existing medical condition was evacuated from his Alton residence at about 5 a.m. Monday morning and taken to a relative's home. Other residents were packing up their belongings in anticipation of having to leave their homes.

Joanne Martinez said the basement of her rental home at the corner of Alton and 4th Street was flooded. It is not known at this time if other homes were damaged.

Meanwhile, the bridge that crosses 1st Avenue in Glenns Ferry was flooded for a short time. The westbound lane was blocked with the local Citizens on Patrol directing traffic.

Sheriff's Deputy Chuck Pickering urged citizens to stay away from the creek at this time.

In addition, county sheriffs reported flooding along Waller Road near Hammett. Initial reports indicate that flood waters washed over the railroad tracks near the Exit 114 overpass by the interstate and were strong enough to carry away some of the ballast holding the tracks and rails in place.

Water starting rising early this morning and appears to have breached the banks at about 4 a.m. As the sun rose, the flood waters began to recede, and emergency response teams and city employees started to assess the damage.

Chief Deputy Nick Schilz from the Elmore County Sheriff's Department will meet with city representatives Monday to discuss methods for dealing with additional flooding should the creek continue to rise. The weather forecast for Glenns Ferry shows morning rain showers are possible.

More details will be posted as information becomes available.
