Jazzi Cristobal, Emalee Pippin and Abigail Zuhike took top honors in the 8- to 9-year-old girls' category during this year's hoop shoot competition.

More than 980 students from local area schools put their basketball skills to the test during this year's hoop shoot competition Saturday.

Hosted annually by the Mountain Home Elks Lodge 2276, the competition follows similar events held at each school to help narrow the field of competitors, according to hoop shoot chairman Larry Fincher.

"They are all winners from the first level of competition as far as I am concerned," Fincher said. "These kids are great examples of sportsmanship and the desire to be the very best they can be."

First-place winners in each of the six divisions go forward to compete in the district-level event scheduled for Jan. 29 in Nampa. Qualifiers at this event advance to take on challengers at regional, state and national levels of competition.
