Police seek leads in vehicle burglaries

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

The Mountain Home Police Department issued a request Wednesday afternoon for leads or information related to a series of vehicle burglaries earlier this week.

Since Sunday, city police responded to at least five vehicle break-ins with a majority happening on the city's north side.

In most instances, those responsible for the crimes shattered a window of the targeted vehicle and took "anything of value," said Police Sgt. Rick Viola, a spokesman with the city police department.

The incidents represent Mountain Home's first vehicle burglaries since January, Viola added.

"This is not a normal thing for us," said Viola regarding the nature of the crimes. Typically, the department deals with "crimes of opportunity" where thieves steal property from unlocked vehicles.

Police investigators suspect the latest crimes happened in the late evenings or overnight with most victims not realizing they were robbed until the following morning. According to Viola, alarm systems installed in the vehicles didn't trigger since most only respond when someone tries to force open a door.

Cases currently under investigation include burglaries on the north end of North 10th East Street, the Cinder Loop and Northeast Crestwood subdivisions as well as West 9th South and Christopher streets.

"We need people's help to report any type of suspicious activity," Viola said. In addition to dialing 911, people may contact the police department directly at 587-2101 during regular business hours. In addition, they can file a report online through the department's "Silent Witness" link at www.mhpd.net. People may choose to file anonymously if they prefer.

  • Gee, this all started Sunday. Today is Wed and it is the first we have heard about it. We never see a patrol car on our street in the area.

My first thought was "maybe it is kids" then my second thought was "maybe if they had some sort of place to recreate, like a rec center. They would not be doing this." Oh but wait, if it is kids, they will be adults and have kids that are teens or older by the time the WECRD gets a building built.

  • So this new rec center wouold be open 23 hours for these thiefs to use? Anyone out doing breakins proabably would not be able to afford the membership fees. As in Freedom, Recreation is not free. With all the rules in place, the majority of the kids will not frequent the the place anyway. This rec thing should be part of the Dream Bill.

  • My son and his wife were victims of one of the vehicle break-ins, it is a significant hardship for them to have to replace the broken window. Please take your fighting about the rec center to a story about the rec center; it doesn't belong here.

  • Just waiting for someone to complain about the water rate increase in this topic as well =)

Not having enough for the "kids" to do is definitely a problem in Mtn Home. However for them to use that as excuse to act in this manner and vandalize is just another excuse.

Add that to the list along with my mommy didn't hug me enough or daddy didnt play catch.

  • I am willing to bet that it was NOT children who did this. It was more than likely grown people who know better, that have no idea how to work for nice things, who are selfish, looking for destructive ways to feed their addictions. Just sayin'

  • Hey, Mr. Low-life crackhead thieves,

Please note that I, too, live in that area...there are many big trucks parked around me and my husband and my male neighbors are big guys who enjoy hunting and don't mind letting you know how they "feel". Just sayin'.
