2 men die in separate incidents

Monday, October 11, 2010

Two men died in separate incidents in the mountains north of Mountain Home on Monday, less than a day after deer hunting season opened locally.

Both men died of heart attacks while hunting with their sons. Both had histories of heart conditions.

Kenneth Dale Combs, 68, of Middleton. died while riding an ATV on a trail along the upper reaches of Bender Creek, above Prairie. After suffering the heart attack, Combs' ATV went off the trail into an adjacent ravine, winding up 30 feet below the trail.

Because of the distance from rescue sources and the rugged nature of the terrain, it took well over an hour for county deputies and search and rescue teams to reach him. Originally reported as being three miles up ATV Trail 300, it actually was seven miles. Although alive at the time the rescuers reached the scene, he succumbed shortly afterward.
