Group launches last-ditch effort to save dance hall

Thursday, October 7, 2010
Sagebrush Shuffler Hall has been used for a variety of community events over the years.

A Mountain Home landmark may soon disappear.

The Sagebrush Shuffler Hall, located on McMurtrey Road and visible from Highway 30, will soon be torn down, unless a small committee dedicated to saving the structure receives significant and immediate help.

The facility has served the community since the 1960s and is one of the oldest square dance halls in Idaho.

What can we as a community do to help keep the hall from going down?

  • There is NO information here(we shouldn't have to pay the paper for basic and important information). I urge those on this small committee to reply on this posting section with details, start a facebook page and let us know what can be done!! I want to help, HOW can I help?

    Where can we donate?

How much needs to be raised?

    Why is the building threatened?

    What's the deadline?

Sheesh...I hope someone replies. I spent so many fun nights at this dance dall growing up, and Mtn. Home needs all the community space it can get. Shame on whoever is thinking of bulldozing this place.

Response by Brenda Fincher, Bus. Mgr., MHNews:
All the information you are seeking is available in this weeks (10/06) edition of the Mountain Home News.
  • It's a fire hazard. The roof is caving in. The electrical wiring needs to be totally replaced. The heater arks when it kicks in. This place is a death trapp. I too have had many times there but it's gone downhill too far to be brought back. Rebuild it from the ground up. It's too dangerous.

  • There are lots of repairs that are needed with that building. I agree with twestall they should just tear it down and build a new one. It would probably be cheaper in the long run to do that anyway.

  • Idaho Girl, "We shouldn't to pay"? What entitlement do we have to a publication which operates as a business. I wish "We shouldn't have to pay" at the grocery store but that wouldn't last long. I guess you will just have to settle for the free samples.

  • And no I don't work for the paper. I just find it amazing when people complain about something they receive for free and somehow feel they have an entitlement to more. Greed is a powerful evil.

  • Don Pachner, Mountain Home, and Dawn & Jay Eaton, Mountain Home, representing the Sagebrush Shufflers, came before the Board. The condition of the Sagebrush Shufflers building was discussed. The County's Building Department has deemed the building as unsafe. Discussion followed on solutions to making the building safe. An engineer is needed to inspect the structure and then the Sagebrush Shufflers will know what needs to be repaired. No one is allowed in the building until it is repaired and deemed safe.

Motion by Shaw, second by Cruser, to adjourn at 6:16 p.m.

    CRUSER - AYE

    SHAW - AYE

ROSE - AYE Motion carried and so ordered.

Hello, Thanks for your comments whether positive or negative, and I have to agree with a lot that is said. I'm the writer of this article and as of right now I'm a committee of one. It's lonely and scary out here, I'm not sure what I'm doing and afraid I could do something to hurt my efforts. This open form of communications is uncomfortable to say the least and I'm inexperienced with it, please be patient. I also feel like a lone voice, within an ocean of negative voices, even within the club. Where some members are still trying to shout out the voices of reason and cooperation and deny there is anyting really wrong with the building. The article holds a lot of basic information from verbal communications, but the written detailed information is still coming in from the engineers who donated their time. The County (forgive my fax pas, the hall actually is outside the city limits) is communicating with one of our own District Dance Assocation Rep from Boise, myself and my husband who is newly elected Sergeant-of-Arms for the Hall (custodian and security). We should have more information on actual repairs and associated costs to hopefully rectify the problems with the hall. I've served as Treasurer, Vice President & First Lady 20 years ago for the club, and my daughters were a couple of the youngest Associate members on record. I'll need help and good advice from those who have also worked a Grassroots Effort to save something near & dear to their Heart. I hope this helps give you a point of contact, because I'm putting me out there for the community to talk to, e-mail me at cherylbahr@msn.com

A plea to IdahoGirl, I think you have some good ideas. Help me learn how to get the word out on any forum available. As walt Disney says "Keep Moving Forward", let's keep our chins up and look to the future.

Pale Ale, a BIG Thanks, I've been trying to remember the date of that meeting for my research and you led me right to it.

  • So can you just post the info here. if not all at least how much is needed and where can we donate. and I have never been inside the building but I'd kick in a buck or two. It would be a great location for exercize or Community Tae Kwon Do on non shufflin nights.

For donations, I have opened a separate account for funds with no club access, only to be used for the hall. The Sagebrush Shuffler Community Hall Preservation Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, located at 210 East Jackson St, Mountain Home, ID 83647, for questions call 208-580-5460.

Today, there is a meeting at the County Building Inspector's Office to discuss the findings of the evaluation team. After which, hopefully we will have a better idea of the total repairs and an estimated cost. Thanks for all your continued support and interest.
