  • Now I hate to go on this tangent esp. after the idahostatesman article about the 12 yr old passing away last week, but put on your helmets people. I know it's your god given right to ride without a helmet, but bottom line cars all too often fail to see bikes, and judging from this picture thats exactly what happened here. I hope the best for the hurt individual!!

  • Our town has now experienced two tragic deaths in the last week. Now, literally three blocks from my own home, there's been another accident involving a motorcyle and vehicle. We're still awaiting news on the condition of the injured man.

What is going on?! I don't want to be critical of anyone. Accidents happen even after taking every precaution possible. But, where's the common sense here? If you're planning on riding a motorcyle, wear a helmet! I know most don't like to and I know you have the right not to but, we've had enough heart breaking tragedies to last for quite a while to come.

All motorist should follow the laws of the road. I believe that most do. But as Idahogrinder pointed out, it's sometimes difficult, if not impossible, to see those on motorcyles. I know I get nervous when I'm driving and see one because I want to ensure they're safe. I try to put distance between us and keep an reasonable eye on them.

For those who absolutely hate helmets and refuse to wear one I simply say this : PLEASE reconsider! If not for anyone else, then for your families and other loved ones. No one wants these kind of tragedies to happen. We all understand that sometimes, regardless of what's done, they still do. But, your chance of survival are greatened if you wear gear meant to protect you.

I would love to hear the news or read an article stating that someone involved in this kind of accident actually survived with - God willing - minimal injuries if at all possible. This is my hometown. It and it's people have been through a lot in a very short time. Please, if we can at all help it, let's not go through anymore or lose another life.

  • Yes, he should have worn a helmet. But the car should have been paying more attention and NOT pulled out in front of him!! We have almost been hit at that corner because of a careless driver.

  • While I agree motercyclists would be safer wearing a helmet, this motercyclist did nothing wrong. This was an accident. Nothing else. The driver was cautious, but as said earlier, sometimes it is hard to see motercyclists. Our town has been through a lot these past few weeks. I pray that this story will have a better outcome.

  • Have had this almost happen to me at this very same intersection. Someone pulled out in front of me and I skidded to a stop. I was wearing a helmet and body armor but it still wouldnt have ended up pretty.

  • Of course people should wear helmets if they ride motorcycles. My opinion, it should be the law in Idaho, just as it is the law for motorists in cars to wear a seat belt. As for motorists being aware of their surroundings, we all need to step up and be more cautious drivers. Everybody wants to go home at the end of the day.

  • Let those who ride decide!

  • Helemt or no, looks like the driver of the car pulled right out in front of the bike. And why, if this happened monday, hasn't the paper indentified the rider? poor reporting when you can't even make the effort to report all the news. Nothing new for MH news though.

Response by Brenda Fincher, Bus. Mgr. MHN:
That was all the information made available to us at the time of the accident which was posted as soon as we could verify the info on the scanner. We wanted to post immediately to make readers aware of road situations. There is a story with all additional information in today's paper on page A3.
  • It is my understanding that the accident was not caused by the vehicle. Can you just imagine how horrible this person feels already? My prayers to all involved.
