Legion Auxiliary offers Blue Star banners

Saturday, July 17, 2010
Amy Thurber, left, lost her son in December 2004. She is being presented a Gold Star Service Banner and an honorary membership by Carol Dalton on behalf of Elmore Unit 26 of the American Legion Auxiliary.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 26 has Blue Star banners available to recognize the service of family members currently in the armed forces of the United States.

The unit also has Gold Star banners for those who might already have lost a loved one who was serving in the military.

The Blue Star Service Banner was designed and patented in 1917 by Army Capt. Robert L. Quelssner, who had two sons serving on the front line. It quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in the service.
